Norway strengthens Arctic defenses with unique F‑35 jets

Norway is the first country to receive all of its ordered F-35 fighter jets from the USA. These jets are exceptional, equipped with special features designed for the harsh climatic conditions in which they are expected to operate.

According to the UNIAN service, Norwegian F-35A fighter jets (the variant chosen by the authorities in Oslo) are distinguished by a "hump." Contrary to false opinions, this hump does not contain additional sensors or electronic warfare equipment. Instead, it results from the extra space on the back of the aircraft, which houses a braking parachute.

F-35 for Norway with an additional feature

This braking parachute allows for safer landings on short and slippery runways, common in Arctic regions, and provides stability during strong tailwinds.

Norway utilizes bases in Ørland and Evenes, and in 2024, after a 40-year hiatus, it plans to reactivate the far northern base of Bardufoss, which is notable for its hangars carved into the rocks. Some of the F-35 fighter jets will be stationed there.

UNIAN adds that using this feature is simple since the pilot can activate it with a dedicated switch on the control panel. Once the jet has stopped, the parachute is detached, facilitating final maneuvers. Norway is the only country with F-35A fighter jets equipped with permanently mounted braking parachute containers. Kevlar is among the materials used in their construction.

Norway decided to purchase 52 units of the F-35A. These fighter jets are replacing the F-16s in its air force, some of which were sold to Romania, while others were transferred to Ukraine.

The F-35A is a conventional take-off and landing variant. It is a multirole stealth fighter capable of reaching speeds of approximately 1.6 Mach (about 1,243 mph) and operating at altitudes up to 49,213 feet. The jet is adapted for electronic warfare and can carry several tons of conventional weaponry. It also features a built-in five-barrel GAU-22/A 25 mm cannon.
