The Japanese Ministry of Defense has contracted with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) to research a new generation of diesel-electric submarines.
In the first half of December 2023, before the contract signing, KHI unveiled the concept of a new submarine notable for its unconventional shape.
Submarine with Vertical Launch Systems (VLS)
Uniquely, the new submarine design has its conning tower shifted towards the stern, reminiscent of Soviet units from Project 941 (Akula type, NATO code: Typhoon). The depth rudders, for the first time in over 30 years, have been relocated not on the tower but in the forward section of the ship's hull.
Relating the conning tower to the rear presents an opportunity to equip the vessel with numerous Vertical Launch System (VLS) launchers.
The VLS launchers enable flexible weapon configuration tailored to specific mission requirements. Utilizing standard launch containers, the VLS launchers can accommodate an assortment of artillery, including ballistic missiles, anti-ship missiles, rocket torpedoes, and varying types of anti-aircraft and missile defense missiles.
Enhanced Capabilities of Japanese Submarines
According to KHI, the new submarines will feature four specifically enhanced elements: covert operation capability for assignments near enemy waters, high maneuverability for discreet following of missile-equipped vessels, advanced hydroacoustic systems for longer-distance targeting, and a new system to purify air from carbon dioxide.
