New York tops billionaire list, Hong Kong loses ground
New York is the city with the largest number of billionaires in the world, according to a new report by Altrata.
According to the report "Billionaire Census 2024," New York hosts the highest number of billionaires in the world—144 in total. This marks an increase of nine compared to last year.
The report from Altrata indicates that the number of individuals with a wealth of over $50 billion increased by 4% compared to last year, reaching 3,323. Billionaires expanded their total wealth during this period by 9%. According to the Business Insider portal, the total wealth currently amounts to $12.1 trillion.
Hong Kong ranks second with 107 billionaires, despite losing five in 2023. San Francisco and London each gained three new billionaires, with totals of 87 and 78 respectively. Moscow rounds out the top five with 77 billionaires, gaining one.
"Most of the top-ranked billionaire cities increased their super-wealthy populations, with the U.S. cities of New York and Los Angeles recording the strongest growth. The headwinds affecting the Chinese economy brought about a decline in billionaire numbers in all three of China’s largest wealth centers: Beijing, Shenzhen and Hangzhou, as well as in Hong Kong," noted the magazine "Robb Report".
Los Angeles moved up to sixth place, surpassing Beijing, by gaining five new billionaires. It currently has 62. The capital of China fell to seventh place with 60 billionaires. India noted the biggest increase in new billionaires, with 304 wealthy individuals, including 40 in Mumbai.
