New York mayor leads charge in massive illegal marijuana crackdown

The mayor of New York has seriously taken up the fight against drugs. Officers recently seized and burned nine thousand pounds of illegal marijuana, and according to authorities, this is just the beginning.

Marijuana enthusiasts are probably experiencing unimaginable agony, thinking about nine thousand pounds of weed that went up in smoke in New York. Mayor Eric Adams personally oversaw the destruction of illegal marijuana sold in unauthorized stores.

It should be emphasized that in many places marijuana can be purchased completely legally. Smoking is allowed, among others, in the Netherlands, and recently cannabis was also legalized in Germany. In New York, the possession of marijuana has been permitted since 2021. Adults can have up to 3 ounces of flowers or cannabis buds or a maximum of 24 grams of concentrated marijuana, such as oils, on their person.

Since in other countries one can buy cannabis without the stress of the police making them turn their pockets inside out, where should you do it? In licensed stores that have permission to sell the drug. Those who thought otherwise painfully learned that it’s better not to distribute marijuana without a license, like intermediaries from New York.

Eric Adams decided to play an active role in removing the contraband. He personally operated a crane to destroy the seized marijuana. As a result of the intervention in New York, one thousand illegal stores were closed. However, this is just a drop in the ocean; there are still about 4 thousand unauthorized locations where cannabis can be bought. Adams emphasized that state-unregulated marijuana is dangerous for various reasons, starting from the unknown origin and composition of the raw material to the risk of it ending up in the hands of minors.

The seized and destroyed marijuana was worth 63 million dollars. Authorities informed that by-products from burning the grass would be used as an energy source for the surrounding community.
