New wave of US nukes in Europe sparks global tensions
The United States has deployed nuclear warheads in Europe. The B61-12 is a modern nuclear weapon characterized by precision and reduced explosive power. This information was revealed by the Italian newspaper "Il Fatto Quotidiano," which disclosed that the weapon has been delivered to Italian bases in Aviano and Ghedi.
American nuclear weapons have been delivered to five countries, including Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Turkey. According to Italian media, introducing these weapons is part of a broader plan to protect allies.
What is the B61-12?
This model of nuclear warhead is the latest American version of such weapons. It is designed to be exceptionally precise, with less explosive power than previous models. The power of one bomb is fifty times smaller than that of Little Boy, which was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. The missile is created to support conventional combat methods in potential conflicts, with its strike occurring in a limited territory.
Russia closely watches and changes its nuclear doctrine
Together, Russia and the USA possess 90% of the world's nuclear weapons. The superpowers constantly observe each other's nuclear arsenals, so the deployment of 100 ballistic missiles on European territory has not gone unnoticed by the Russians. By the end of 2024, Vladimir Putin introduced changes in his country's nuclear doctrine. According to these changes, in the event of a nuclear attack on Russia's territory or that of an ally, the use of weapons of mass destruction is permitted. Additionally, the use of weapons may occur if there is a violation of the state's sovereignty.
The European system is currently equipped with up to 100 American nuclear warheads. As of 2021, Russia possesses 5,580 nuclear warheads, and the United States has 5,044 of this type of weapon.
