Robert Eggers has been on quite a run. His feature debut, "The Witch, a Folk Tale from New England," was made with a budget of 4 million dollars and brought in more than 40 million dollars from ticket sales worldwide. It featured the then-young Anya Taylor-Joy, whose fee now would probably be as much as the entire production budget was back then. The success of the film was enormous. Another success followed quickly. Eggers directed "The Lighthouse" for another 4 million dollars, starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, grossing "only" 18 million dollars worldwide. His next film, "The Northman," was a box office hit, raking in nearly 70 million dollars. There is no shortage of movie fans eagerly awaiting the director’s next film.
Robert Eggers and his "Nosferatu"
Reports quickly surfaced that Eggers was taking on a classic - he would present a new version of "Nosferatu." There are plenty of vampire stories, but it was certain that this director would bring something unique. He cast Lily-Rose Depp as the leading lady and made Bill Skarsgård the ancient vampire Count Orlok. Additionally, the cast includes the aforementioned Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Emma Corrin.
According to the producer's description, "'Nosferatu' is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing unimaginable horror."
The first trailer for Eggers' film is already out. In just 15 hours, it has been viewed over 3 million times on YouTube, and the count is still rising. "This is what a vampire horror should look like—suspense and lots of fear. A beautiful horror and the best monster," wrote one internet user under the video. It looks like Eggers will make us cover our eyes in theatres.
There has been talk about Eggers tackling "Nosferatu" since 2015. The film was supposed to be made earlier—it was meant to be his second film. However, something held him back. "It feels ugly and blasphemous and egomaniacal and disgusting for a filmmaker in my place to do Nosferatu next," he commented. The film wasn't made quickly, and Eggers even threatened in the media that he might never finish it. The "sign" was that Anya Taylor-Joy, who Eggers initially picked for the leading role, couldn’t take the part.
