The Italian region of Umbria has introduced an innovative solution to combat bothersome insects. An artificial island resembling a raft has been established on Lake Trasimeno.

New technology on the lake

Lake Trasimeno is the largest lake on the Apennine Peninsula. Surrounded by charming medieval towns, it attracts both locals and tourists. The lake already features several islands, two of which are open for visits. However, it's the newly constructed artificial island that has captured the attention of the Italian media.

Designed to capture chironomids from the midge family, the island offers a much-needed reprieve for the local community and visitors alike.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by local authorities to invest in public health and environmental protection. Funded by public resources, the project aims to decrease the number of nuisance insects that generate numerous complaints during the summer months.

The island captures insects

The artificial island is fitted with an advanced technological system, including a photovoltaic installation. This setup effectively traps the insects in special containers, significantly reducing their presence along the lake shores.

The creators of the system emphasize that it functions selectively, primarily targeting chironomids that inhabit the lake. This approach helps protect the area from an infestation of these insects, which is particularly beneficial for the tourism and hospitality sectors in the region.
