Why do Afrikaners want to leave South Africa?
Nearly 70,000 white residents of South Africa have expressed interest in moving to the USA. Neil Diamond, president of the South African Chamber of Commerce in the USA, emphasized that the chamber's website is experiencing immense interest. "They have between two to three dependents, so it is a clear indication that people expressing interest are really a younger generation, maybe a generation that has not fully enjoyed the benefits of our country and is seeking to get better opportunities for their children," Diamond explained in an interview with Newzroom Afrika.
What are the reactions to Trump's decision?
In February, President Donald Trump issued an executive order recognizing Afrikaners as victims of "unjust racial discrimination." In response, several thousand white South African residents gathered outside the US embassy in Pretoria, expressing support for Trump. Some held signs with messages such as: "Mr. Donald Trump, thank you very much."
What is South Africa's president saying?
President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a law allowing land expropriation without compensation, meant to address demands for land redistribution. Ramaphosa explained that the legislation aims to ensure fair and equitable access to land as per the constitution. However, the US president disagreed with these explanations and cut off all assistance that South Africa was receiving from the United States. Last week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared the South African ambassador to the USA persona non grata.
