Navy locates $67M fighter jet wreck in Washington's Cascade Mountains
The U.S. Navy has located the wreckage of a fighter jet that crashed during a routine training flight in Washington state, in the country's northwest. The fate of the crew remains unknown, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.
On board the EA-18G Growler fighter jet, designed for electronic warfare, were two servicemen: a pilot and an operator. It is unclear whether they managed to eject.
The crash occurred in part of the Cascade Mountains. The highest peak in this range, Mount Rainier, reaches nearly 14,400 feet above sea level. The aircraft crashed in a difficult-to-access, densely forested region, and the wreck cannot be reached by any vehicle.
Search operations are being conducted using helicopters. Snowfall is expected in the Cascade Mountains area over the weekend.
The cost of one fighter jet is $67 million
The EA-18G Growler aircraft we fly utilize the most advanced technology in air electronic warfare and represent the Navy's front line of defence in hostile environments, the U.S. Navy reported. The cost of one such fighter jet is approximately $67 million.
