Natural scents: Create your own eco‑friendly air freshener

Smell plays a key role in our lives, affecting our well-being. To avoid unpleasant odors at home, we often reach for candles, incense, or air fresheners that fill the space with a pleasant aroma. The problem, however, is that they are often made with artificial ingredients.

Aromatherapy is a branch of alternative medicine based on the belief that scents can improve health and well-being. Its roots date back to ancient times. Scientists have noticed and discovered that aromatherapy has significant therapeutic potential.

In this method, natural scents, mainly essential oils and distillates, are used. Each scent can affect us differently—some energize, others relax. It's worthwhile to explore aromatherapy and start using it at home. The simplest way is to create a homemade air freshener to bring a natural, beautiful fragrance to your home. We explain how to prepare it.

How to prepare a homemade air freshener?

Essential oils are obtained from fresh or dried plant parts, so their scents are natural and pleasant. Depending on the plant, essential oils cost about $2.50 per bottle. The cheaper ones include lavender oils, while the most expensive is made from Damask rose petals—5 ml of this oil can cost as much as $450.

Dreaming of a natural, beautiful scent at home? Choose a good essential oil or make your homemade air freshener, which is inexpensive. You only need two things: lemon peels and a sandwich bag. Grate the peels on a fine grater and put them in the bag. The more peels you add, the more intense the scent will be. Close the bag and place it on a radiator. Your room will be filled with a pleasant, citrus aroma within a few minutes.

Eco-friendly odor neutralizer

The bathroom often has an unpleasant smell due to bacteria accumulating on tiles, towels, or fixtures. How can you get rid of it? After cleaning, it's worth using a homemade odor neutralizer.

To make it, you'll need a spray bottle, two tablespoons of water, three tablespoons of fabric softener, and one tablespoon of baking soda. Place all the ingredients in the bottle and mix them. You can use this spray immediately. Baking soda effectively absorbs unpleasant odors, and the fabric softener will add a pleasant fragrance to the room.
