Natural remedies: Herbs for a restful night's sleep

A good, restorative sleep significantly impacts the way you feel the next day. Everyday problems or challenges seem less daunting, and obstacles become easier to overcome. Full rest also affects the condition of the body and the efficiency of the mind.

Of course, an herbal blend can enhance sleep quality. However, efficient rest is influenced by several other factors, such as physical activity, low stress, and a healthy diet. An herbal infusion won't replace a balanced daily rhythm, but it can help calm racing thoughts.

Herbs that improve sleep quality

An infusion for good sleep should include lemon balm, which has a calming, anti-anxiety effect and relieves tension. It has a pleasant lemon flavor, so you don't need to reduce its amount.

Another ingredient is chamomile, which, apart from its calming effect, aids digestion. It protects the stomach, which also affects sleep comfort. Chamomile is mild and has a slightly honey-like taste, making it an ideal companion for lemon balm.

The next two ingredients are slightly more pronounced – lavender and hop cones. Dried flowers have a relaxing effect on the whole body and reduce nervous tension, but their intense aroma may not appeal to everyone. Meanwhile, hop cones exhibit greater sleep-inducing properties, but have a bitter taste. Dose these herbs according to your preferences, not exceeding one teaspoon daily.

How to make a herbal infusion for good sleep?

Below you will find a recipe for an herbal blend composed of four elements that complement each other. You can experiment with proportions to create a drink that best suits you. Drink the infusion 30-60 minutes before going to rest. Observe how you feel afterward.

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon dried lemon balm
  • 1 teaspoon dried chamomile flower
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried lavender flower
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried hop cones

Instructions:

  1. Place the dried herbs and flowers in a teapot or large mug.
  2. Pour 10 ounces of hot water over them – you can wait a moment until the water in the kettle cools to about 194-203 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Cover the teapot or mug with the herbal mixture and let it steep for about 10 minutes.
  4. After this time, strain the herbs through a fine sieve and pour into a cup.
