General von Sandrart is deeply invested in the situation in Ukraine. He underscored that 2022 has been an exceptional year in NATO's history due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which severely disrupted the Euro-Atlantic security framework and caused significant repercussions.

"This is the most profound assault on the principles our international order has been founded upon for many decades," the Corps Commander stated.

Von Sandrart added that despite these challenges, the alliance has displayed commendable unity and swift responsiveness to the drastically altered security landscape. He also expressed high regard for the resilience of the Ukrainian people and their armed forces.

On a less positive note, he shared some disconcerting news regarding NATO. In his view, Russia, in spite of the aggressive war in Ukraine, is working on restoring its combat abilities, which could endanger the Baltic region.

"Russia is currently heavily engaged in the unlawful war with Ukraine, but it has already begun and will continue to rebuild its capabilities irrespective of the conflict in Ukraine. This presents a rising threat to the Baltic Sea region," he explained, as quoted by "Ukrainska Pravda".

General Speaks Candidly About Russia, Aligns With Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

During his speech, von Sandrart aligned with the stance of Gabrielius Landsbergis, the head of Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, asserting that Russia is mobilizing its resources against NATO.

"We should be extremely cautious when drawing conclusions from this. I believe that actions taken concerning the supplementation and strengthening of the Lithuanian Armed Forces' capabilities have been judicious and are on the right path," he added.

The general also noted that it's incorrect to assume that defense against Russia can solely rely on the acquisition of drones and anti-aircraft equipment.
