NATO chief insists on U.S. backing for lasting peace in Ukraine
Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, head of the NATO Military Committee, emphasized in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica that the United States must support any potential peacekeeping forces in Ukraine.
During the conversation with the Roman newspaper, Admiral Cavo Dragone stressed that following the Munich Security Conference, there is a consensus that Americans' support is essential even if they do not directly participate in peacekeeping forces. "There is a need for a lasting guarantee against any risk of invasion," the admiral assessed.
Cavo Dragone also addressed the "two-headed NATO" vision presented by U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
The admiral expressed that if future agreements led to NATO having a dual presence in both the Indo-Pacific and Europe, it would be a positive outcome. In his view, this would establish the Alliance as a key force for global stability, even in distant regions. He also conveyed confidence that NATO's core unity would remain intact.
Defense spending must increase
The Italian admiral emphasized that defense spending at 2% of GDP is "absolutely insufficient" to implement plans to combat threats. He highlighted the need to start a "new phase of industrial cooperation, just like after World War II."
He critically assessed the industry's current state, which, in his opinion, has not made the necessary "qualitative leap" and still operates with "short-term thinking aimed at maximizing profits. "This is no longer acceptable," he emphasized.
Support for Ukraine
Discussing the situation in Ukraine, Admiral Cavo Dragone affirmed that NATO remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the Ukrainian armed forces. He emphasized that the objective is to ensure Ukraine enters negotiations from a position of strength.
He emphasized that the Ukrainian people and soldiers exemplify true heroism and underscored the need to express unwavering support without any conditions or reservations.
