Microsoft's security patch for Windows 10 BitLocker encryption reportedly failing for some users

The update in question, known as "Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based systems (KB5034441)", was recently made available to Windows 10 computers via the Windows Update service. Its purpose was to fix a vulnerability in BitLocker encryption security (CVE-2024-20666).

Unfortunately, it appears that in some instances, the update fails to install. The internet has seen a surge in discussions where users report encountering error code 0x80070643. This error is often displayed as the message, "There were problems installing the update, but we will try again later. If this problem persists, you can search the Internet or access technical support information using the error code: (0x80070643)".

Issues with update KB5034441

The underlying cause of this issue is the insufficient size of the WinRE partition, which prevents the installation of update KB5034441. Microsoft suggests manually enlarging the WinRE partition by 0.276 cubic yards through the command line. In many cases, it may also be required to reduce the system partition size. However, caution should be exercised as this process is recommended solely for experienced users. Improperly conducted operations pose a risk of data loss.

Various guides are becoming available online to assist users. Alternatively, similar actions can be taken using other disk partitioning tools, such as EaseUS Partition Master Free, for example. At present, it remains unclear if Microsoft intends to roll out another update to accommodate configurations with a smaller WinRE partition.
