When Michael Jackson was alive and active artistically, Bubbles gained popularity. The relationship between the King of Pop and his pet was so close that it inspired artist Jeff Koons to create a unique sculpture depicting the musician and the chimpanzee.

Bubbles leads a good life as one of the older primates, his caretakers reported.

Michael Jackson's chimpanzee: Peaceful and expensive retirement

According to Patti Ragan from the "Center for Great Apes" in an interview with TMZ, Bubbles enjoys playing with other animals, exploring the extensive tunnel system throughout the facility, and sometimes even takes a brush and paints pictures.

According to TMZ, Bubbles' stay and care are funded by the "Estate of Michael Jackson". The cost is $27,000 per year.

Fans of the pop star regularly gift the chimpanzee treats and presents. Bubbles is sometimes visited by Jackson's former lawyer as well as some family members.

Bubbles was bought at a young age by a Hollywood animal trainer who gave him to Jackson as a pet. The chimpanzee later appeared in TV shows, movies, and music videos. When he was just four years old, he accompanied the singer on a promotional tour of Japan.

After "retiring" in 2005, Bubbles was moved to a park in Florida. Michael Jackson died in Los Angeles in June 2009.
