Mexican president vows to defend nationals amid Trump policies
We will defend Mexicans living in the USA, assured Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Sunday. These words were spoken a day before Donald Trump's inauguration, who announced the mass deportation of migrants from the USA.
With the new phase beginning tomorrow under President Trump, Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that the primary focus will be on protecting Mexican men and women living in the United States. She noted that consulates have already been strengthened with additional legal support to assist them.
The President of Mexico reminded us that over 30 million Mexicans live in the United States and significantly contribute to the development of its economy. In 2024, Mexican immigrants sent $65 billion to their families in Mexico, which constituted 20 percent of their incomes. This means that 80 percent of their incomes remained in the USA.
Tensions between Mexico and the USA
In addition to mass deportations, Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on goods from Mexico. Sheinbaum warned that Mexico could respond with retaliatory tariffs, which could lead to inflation and job losses on both sides of the border.
Claudia Sheinbaum, the first woman to serve as President of Mexico, took office in October 2024. Her predecessor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, maintained good relations with Trump and helped reduce illegal immigration.
