Mexican Navy seizes record-breaking 18,300 lbs of drugs at sea
The Mexican navy announced the completion of a maritime operation during which a record amount of drugs was seized in the Pacific—exactly 18,300 pounds—the estimated value of the seized cargo amounts to $146.2 million.
"Navy personnel seized 8,361 kilograms of illicit cargo, which represents the largest amount of drugs seized in a maritime operation, unprecedented in history," stated the Mexican Navy fleet in a Friday release.
The seizure occurred in the Pacific Ocean, southwest of the city of Lazaro Cardenas, located in the state of Michoacan on the western coast of Mexico. Twenty-three people were arrested in the operation.
The statement did not specify the exact types of drugs seized or their origins.
The AFP agency recalled that the most significant drug seizure in Mexico took place in November 2007, when 50,700 pounds of Colombian cocaine were confiscated.
