6:31 AM EST, November 10, 2023
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion' as the theme for next year's Met Gala event. This event is known for its extravagance as celebrities dressed as princes and princesses will take center stage.
Expectations rise every year with the announcement of the Met Gala theme, and 2024 is no exception. The upcoming gala, accompanied as always by a related fashion exhibition, promises to be exceptionally splendid due to its theme. The associated exhibition will showcase around 250 items from the Costume Institute's permanent collection.
In a chat with Vogue, Max Hollein, the director and president of The Met's Marina Kellen French, said, "This innovative exhibition will expand the reach of our imagination, allowing us to experience various aspects of the works, deepen our understanding of their history, and ultimately enhance our appreciation for their beauty."
The announcement of the exhibition and gala's theme was made by Andrew Bolton, curator Wendy Yu from the Costume Institute. She explained to Vogue: "Fashion is one of the most emotive forms of art due to its intimate connection with the body. It carries memories and emotions, and we connect with it through our senses. I hope this project will stimulate our senses, leading to a more profound exploration of fashion."
Expect to See Royals at the Met Gala?
Although the theme, 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion' might suggest motifs of princesses, princes, queens, and kings, it actually refers to historically significant garments. These include dresses, suits, and other apparel that can no longer be worn due to their age or the materials they were made from.

According to internet users, this Met Gala theme could perfectly suit classic designs by Christian Dior or Alexander McQueen, alongside works by Charles Frederick Worth. Anticipations for Met Gala 2024 paint a picture of abundant princess-themed dresses and attire inspired by past historical eras. Who knows, maybe celebrities like Jared Leto or Doja Cat will even take the theme literally and adopt bed or bedroom inspired outfits?
