Since it was revealed that Meryl Streep is no longer with her husband, Don Gummer, speculation about her connection to "Only Murders in the Building" star Martin Short hasn't ceased. The pair appeared together again at the Emmy Awards.

Meryl Streep and Martin Short sparked speculation about their relationship when they were spotted together at the 76th Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 15. The 75-year-old Oscar winner and the 74-year-old comedy star sat next to each other during the ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Although they arrived on the red carpet separately, their behavior at the gala, including shared laughter and close interactions, did not quell rumors of a possible romance. The pair had previously been seen holding hands at the premiere of the fourth season of the popular comedy series Only Murders in the Building, where Short plays one of the main roles, and Streep appears as a guest star.

Fans and journalists have their theories

On the platform X (formerly Twitter), the Gibson Johns podcast joked about observing Meryl Streep and Martin Short in the front row, looking for evidence of their relationship. Other social media users also actively commented on their behavior. Some noticed that the pair ignored the ceremony, only talking to each other.

The news of Meryl's split from her husband, Don Gummer, after 45 years of marriage was revealed in October 2023 and only fueled the rumors. Meryl joined the cast of "Only Murders in the Building" as a guest star in the third season and continues her role in the currently airing fourth season. Streep and Short officially claim they are just friends.

Meryl and Martin were both nominated for this year's Emmys. Short lost in the best actor category in a comedy series to Jeremy Allen White, who won the trophy for his performance in "The Bear." Meanwhile, Streep was defeated by Liza Colón-Zayas ("The Bear"), who won in the category of best supporting actress in a comedy series.
