Mercedes-AMG SL63 S E Performance Debuts as an 800 Horsepower Convertible
The latest top-of-the-line Mercedes SL has finally arrived. Nestled beneath the hood of this German roadster is a potent hybrid engine that more than delivers in performance.
Engineers at Affalterbach have chosen to utilize the proven foundation of a twin-turbocharged, four-liter V8 engine, enhancing it with an auxiliary electric unit. This arrangement not only enables purely electrical driving for up to 8 miles, but also adds a great thrill to the ride.
Thanks to a combined power output of 817 HP and a maximum torque of 1,046 lb-ft, the car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 2.9 seconds. Remarkably, this top speed of approximately 197 mph is attainable even with the convertible top retracted.
In addition to the state-of-the-art engine, Mercedes has incorporated active aerodynamics. One of the standout features is a movable panel beneath the engine, which lowers by 1.57 inches (40mm) upon reaching 49.7mph (80km/h), generating additional downforce on the front axle. The rear spoiler also adjusts actively, assuming a more aggressive position.
The top variant comes standard with ceramic brakes featuring six-piston calipers and ample discs. The 16.5-inch front discs (420mm) and 15-inch rear discs (380mm) are ensconced behind light, 20-inch AMG wheels.
Despite these impressive features, it's worth noting that the SL63 S E Performance maintains a surprisingly subdued appearance for such a high-performance model. Distinctive red emblems and the charging port flap in the rear bumper are the only indicators that you're dealing with the top variant.
The latest AMG model isn't only the most powerful SL to date, but also the most technologically advanced. Alongside the innovative active aerodynamics, the car boasts an array of features including a rear steering axle, adaptive AMG Active Ride Control suspension, and regenerative braking system.
This offering from Mercedes won't come cheap, but the exact details will have to wait a bit longer.
