In the letter, the 120 MEPs asked the Commission or member states to put forth a proposal adhering to Article 7(2) of the EU treaty. This could initiate a process to confirm the presence of a serious breach of EU values in Hungary, which may ultimately lead to the suspension of Budapest's voting rights within the Council.

"The letter's success signals the Parliament's clear aspiration to activate Article 7(2) of the Treaty. More importantly, it underscores the pressing need to address Viktor Orban's actions. The next step should be assessing the final overall support for the notion detailed in the petition at an impending plenary session. This can be accelerated as the Parliament is scheduled to vote on a resolution about Hungary next week. The terms of the resolution are currently under negotiation, and I believe it's highly likely that Article 7(2) will be incorporated in some form," Sarvamaa informed journalists stationed in Brussels.

Judit Varga, an MP with Fidesz and former Minister of Justice in the Orban Government, has previously commented on this issue.

"It didn't take long for the European liberal left to contradict itself. They're worried about the rule of law in #Hungary even after we built the best-qualified judicial system in the EU..." she wrote on the "X" platform.
