Separating art from the artist is not easy. In some cases, one might question whether it should even be done (P. Diddy, Roman Polanski, Johnny Depp), which raises many moral dilemmas. Cancel culture is thriving, yet many problematic artists still manage to ride the wave.
One prime example of such balancing acts is Matty Healy from The 1975. Fans of the band constantly face an ethical dilemma: Do they really want to financially support this performer? Healy is known for controversial behavior and making inappropriate remarks, including racist and sexist "jokes" targeting specific individuals. The musician mocked the appearance and heritage of rapper Ice Spice, who later—so iconically—was featured on "Karma" by Taylor Swift, Healy's ex-partner.
But that's not all. During a festival in Kuala Lumpur, Matty strongly criticized the prevailing laws there, which discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals, by kissing bassist Ross MacDonald on stage. The event's rules prohibited discussing political topics on stage, such as alcohol consumption, smoking, and profanity. Healy clearly disregarded these rules, resulting in The 1975 performance being stopped, the rest of the event being canceled, and the band being banned in Malaysia.
Matty Healy sucked a fan's thumb. Earlier, he ate a "bloody" steak
Matty Healy—one of the most problematic figures in show business—is an intriguing topic for a PowerPoint party presentation. The musician has a history of kissing fans without asking for consent or age verification (at one point, he began asking for ID). This time, his actions were even more extreme.
A young woman "boasted" on TikTok that Matty Healy sucked her thumb at a concert. It dawned on her moments later that the artist had just eaten a piece of raw meat.
The incident occurred last year during the "Still... At Their Very Best" tour, but it resurfaced thanks to a post on X. Internet users are horrified and disgusted by The 1975's frontman's behavior.
"I would die if I had to be in the same room as Matty Healy, but this? I'm planning my funeral." "Personally, I would amputate my thumb." "My worst nightmare." "Taylor, did you kiss this guy?" - these are some of the comments.
