"The world needs to be reminded vehemently that, despite almost two years of this catastrophic war, Putin's mission remains unchanged. He is determined to dismantle Ukraine and subdue its citizens. This must be stopped," declared the president, who is currently vacationing in the Virgin Islands. He underlined that although Ukraine has used American-provided air defense systems to shield itself from the onslaught, contributing to saving numerous lives, further assistance is endangered by the inertia in Congress.
"Without urgent action from Congress in the new year, we won't be in a position to continue sending the weapons and crucial air defense systems that Ukraine needs to protect its people. Congress must recognize the urgency and act without delay," stated Biden.
Biden cautions Congress
Negotiations for a new aid package for Ukraine are underway in the Senate, with a session planned for January 8th. Leaders from both parties expressed optimism that an agreement would be finalized shortly after their return from the holiday break. However, discussions on immigration reforms, which form part of the package, are labeled complex.
The president emphasized that what's at risk is not only Ukraine but also the security of NATO and Europe. This is due to Putin's threats to some of America's allies and the potential implications of a Russian victory, which could drag the U.S. into another European war.
"We must not let down our allies and partners. We cannot fail Ukraine. History will cast a harsh judgment on those who turn a blind eye to the call for freedom," Biden asserted.
