According to the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations, the incident occurred on Saturday at 12:20 local time (Friday at 9:20 PM Eastern Time), prompting at least 270 people to be promptly evacuated.
The fire rapidly spread across 11,840 square feet of the center as rescue services battled the flames. "Firefighters successfully extinguished the fire, which had notably reached the building's roof," states the Russian-language news portal "Vot Tak!", associated with Belsat.
Unofficial reports from a local Telegram channel suggest the fire originated in a pizzeria within the center's food court, before spreading further. "Vot Tak!" emphasizes that this information has not been officially confirmed.
Social media footage depicted thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the site, marking yet another significant blaze within Russian shopping or warehouse facilities in recent times. Earlier in the year, a fire ravaged a Wildberries company warehouse near St. Petersburg, consuming an extensive 538,196 square feet, with reported damages nearing 10 billion rubles.
"Vot Tak!" highlights an alarming statistic: in 2023, Russia experienced 350,000 fires, resulting in over 7,000 fatalities.
