Mars rock discovery: Zebra-patterned stone stuns scientists

NASA reports another fascinating discovery made by the Perseverance rover on Mars. In Jezero Crater, the rover has found a stone with an attention-grabbing appearance. Scientists believe this is one of the most interesting finds on the Red Planet.

The Perseverance rover captured an image of the stone featuring a unique, zebra-like pattern on September 13, 2023. The object, dubbed "Freya Castle," is about 8 inches wide, roughly the length of an average adult male's hand, reports Science Alert. The distinct pattern of light and dark stripes on this boulder stands out from other geological formations studied to date on Mars.

Mars holds many secrets

Perseverance utilized its Mastcam-Z camera suite to take multispectral images of the stone. These images allowed scientists to develop hypotheses about the origin of this extraordinary cosmic object. "Our knowledge of Freya Castle's chemical composition is limited, but early interpretations suggest that its characteristic bands could have formed as a result of magmatic or metamorphic processes," wrote Athanasios Klidaras, a scientist from Purdue University, on NASA’s blog.

The Freya Castle stone is not attached to the ground, which may suggest that it originated elsewhere. According to scientists' theories, it might have rolled down from a higher part of the slope. The prospect of discovering similar formations during the rover's continued ascent is extremely exciting for researchers. "We hope that during Perseverance’s further journey, it encounters a larger rock of this type so that we can take more detailed measurements," emphasizes Klidaras.

Freya Castle is not the only remarkable discovery made during Mars missions. This year, the Curiosity rover detected pure hydrogen sulfide in the Gale Crater. Another find, the Chevaya Falls rock, was covered in spots resembling animal patterns, which could suggest biological processes. Despite ruling out the involvement of organisms in forming these structures, these discoveries continue to capture scientists' attention.

The Perseverance rover on Mars

Since 2021, the Perseverance rover has been exploring the Red Planet for traces of ancient life. Its mission is part of NASA's Mars 2020 project. Perseverance landed in Jezero Crater, which was once filled with water and might have been an ideal environment for microbial life. The rover collects rock samples, which will await future missions to transport them to Earth.

The Mars Sample Return mission, jointly conducted by NASA and ESA, plans to launch a container with samples from the surface of Mars and safely deliver them to Earth. This is likely to occur in the early 2030s. It is also worth noting that the Perseverance mission focuses not only on Jezero Crater. Currently, the rover is exploring the Bright Angel area, where there is a unique type of rock named "popcorn rock." Scientists hope that this region will provide more information about Mars's history and its potential biological resources.
