Macron stressed the importance of setting a firm deadline for President Putin, making it evident to all that he lacks genuine intent for peace. He also noted that Russia should understand the serious risk of facing tough sanctions if it fails to respond.

The French leader stressed that former President Donald Trump also realized that when Putin declared a desire for peace, he was not speaking the truth.

Macron also recalled that as early as May 10, European leaders, while in Kyiv, gave Moscow an ultimatum: An unconditional and lasting ceasefire or new, severe sanctions. Russia then rejected the truce conditions and proposed negotiations, which began in Turkey but yielded no breakthrough.

Macron noted that he hopes Donald Trump's anger toward Russia's actions will translate into concrete steps.

"We have seen signs of Donald Trump's frustration in recent hours. It's time for actions to follow words," said Macron.

Massive attacks on Ukraine

He also emphasized that the United States should clearly support the European sanction initiative against Russia, as their credibility depends on it.

Trump's remarks were in reaction to the massive Russian attack on Ukraine from Saturday to Sunday, which involved ballistic missiles and drones. As a result of the shelling, at least 12 people were killed, and 60 were injured—including children among the victims.
