Syrian rebels announced on Sunday in a televised statement the liberation of Damascus and the overthrow of President Assad after 24 years of his rule.

Assad, who crushed all signs of dissent and imprisoned thousands of people, flew out of Damascus on Sunday in an unknown direction.
