Luigi Mangione joins P. Diddy in 'celebrity jail'

Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering American millionaire Brian Thompson, has been placed in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where rapper P. Diddy is also held. This facility has become known as the "celebrity jail," with much discussion about its barbaric conditions.

Mangione faces charges including first and second-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm. According to "The New York Post," rapper P. Diddy is held in the same prison.

The Metropolitan Detention Center is often called the "celebrity jail." Despite its name, there are no luxuries to be found there. In 2019, the former warden, Cameron Lindsay, described it as "one of the most troubled, if not the most troubled facility." In 2024, a federal judge threatened to dismiss a sentence if the inmate was sent to the MDC due to its "inhumane conditions."

Rapper P. Diddy is confined in the Special Housing Unit, known as "the hole," where conditions are particularly harsh. Inmates don't even have pillows, and the cells are small and uncomfortable. Those who break the rules, are in protective custody, or are awaiting transfer to another prison end up there. Diddy's lawyer described these conditions as "disgusting" in a conversation with CNN.

He’s waking up on a steel bed with a one-and-a-half-inch mattress, no pillow, in an eight by 10-foot cell that I can assure you is disgusting - he said.

It is unknown if Mangione will end up in the same part of the prison as Diddy. Federal charges could result in the death penalty for him. The Metropolitan Detention Center has previously housed notable figures like R. Kelly and Ghislaine Maxwell.
