On May 16, a spectacular prison escape occurred in New Orleans. Ten inmates used damaged cell doors to make their way outside. They then breached the barbed wire fence and disappeared under the cover of night. Their absence was only discovered during the morning inmate count.

The Louisiana state police reported the apprehension of three of the ten escapees. One was captured in Baton Rouge, and two others were caught in Walker County, Texas. The remaining inmates are still at large.

According to officials cited by CNN, the escape was precisely planned. An increasing number of arrests of individuals suspected of involvement point to the complexity of the operation. Investigators are analyzing prison communications, including recorded phone conversations. They do not rule out that additional charges may be filed against other individuals as the investigation progresses.

Statement from the attorney general

The Attorney General of Louisiana, Liz Murrill, assured that all those responsible for the escape will be held accountable.

In her statement, she emphasized that, as promised at the start of the investigation, every individual who played a role in the prison escape in New Orleans will be held accountable.

Investigators continue to analyze the evidence, and further charges against other inmates or prison staff are possible. The investigation also encompasses attempts to cover up the incident in the first hours after it occurred.
