Lithuania boosts energy security with military backup

The Lithuanian government has decided to strengthen the protection of its critical infrastructure. Starting in January, it will be guarded by the Lithuanian Public Security Service, with the military available for assistance if necessary. Previously, this protection was managed by a private company.

The enhanced measures will cover the Poland-Lithuania energy bridge, LitPol Link in Alytus, the NordBalt infrastructure in Klaipeda, the Litgrid data center in Vilnius, and the power plant in Elektrenai.

"After synchronization with the continental European power grid at the beginning of February 2025, these facilities will be crucial for the continued reliable operation of the Lithuanian power system," released the Lithuanian government.

The government is also considering deploying military forces to protect the liquefied natural gas terminals, oil product terminals in Klaipeda, and the Orlen Lietuva refinery.

Change in Lithuania: The military will protect important facilities

The need to prioritize the protection of energy infrastructure became evident after Russia initiated its war in Ukraine in 2022 and following incidents in the Baltic Sea that damaged underwater cables.

The government in Vilnius underscores that energy security is vital for the country's stability.
