Lindsey Vonn returns to slope after training scare
Lindsey Vonn, the legendary American alpine skier, experienced a minor fall during training before the World Cup competition in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Fortunately, nothing serious occurred, and the American skier will participate in the event. Her return to the slopes is the most significant event of this winter.
Lindsey Vonn, the decorated American alpine skier, returns to competition after a long hiatus. She had a minor fall while training for the World Cup in the Italian town of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Her team confirmed this information; fortunately, it was just a scare this time.
The 40-year-old Vonn was training with other competitors before the downhill event. She fell, sustaining a bruise on her thigh, but avoided any serious injuries. This means she'll be able to compete in Italy over the weekend. Cortina d'Ampezzo and Milan will host the Winter Olympics next year.
Italian skier Federica Brignone recorded the best time during Thursday's training, surpassing her compatriots Sofia Goggia and Nadia Delago.
Vonn, who in her career has won Olympic gold (downhill in Vancouver 2010) and world championships (super-G and downhill in Val d'Isere 2009), has 12 World Cup victories in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The fall on Thursday happened just before the finish line.
The American is returning to competition after nearly a six-year break. In April 2024, she underwent surgery to have a prosthesis implanted in her left knee. Now, she is back in excellent form and competing at the elite level again. She might even win an Olympic medal in Cortina, where the Winter Games will be held next year.
The American can now boast four Crystal Globes for triumphing in the overall World Cup classification, eight small Crystal Globes in downhill, five in super-G, three in super combined, and 82 World Cup race victories. This is the second-highest number of wins in history, with the most victories held by Mikaela Shiffrin (USA).
