Lightning strikes spark alarm in north Texas neighborhoods
During storms in northern Texas, lightning struck homes in Southlake and Colleyville, causing concern among residents.
Storms in northern Texas in the United States caused alarm among residents of Southlake and Colleyville when two homes were hit by lightning.
In Southlake, a resident captured photos of a neighbor's house fire after it was struck by lightning. According to CBS News, the individual lives four houses away from the scene, near the intersection of Monte Carlo Drive and La Mans Lane.
We lived in Fort Worth before, and we have never seen this kind of fire caused by lightning before - said Saksena, who has lived in the Carillon neighborhood for 10 years. - I saw the smoke coming out of the house, and then within 30 seconds or so, about four or five trucks and a police truck came.
An insurance appraiser was examining the damage to the house, which suffered significant roof destruction. Saksena noted that this is the third time in the past five years that a house on the same street has been struck by lightning.
It is really scary, but we don't know why - he said. - Something has to be down there, but the same road is being hit - he added.
Why do lightning strikes hit the same places?
Chief Meteorologist for CBS News Texas, Scott Padgett, explained that many factors can influence why a particular area is more prone to lightning strikes than others. Padgett stated that lightning always seeks the highest point of contact it can find.
Padgett explained that during intense storms, structures with very tall roofs that stand higher than anything else in the vicinity are more likely to be struck by lightning compared to nearby lower objects.
He added that it also depends on the intensity of the storm. After the last strike, the affected resident installed lightning rods on his home's roof, as did many of his neighbors, to prevent future damage.
