On the morning of Friday, December 22, a flight embarked from the Polish airport (Kraków) towards Birmingham. Unfortunately, an orrifying incident took place just a few minutes following takeoff.

"The aircraft was struck by lightning at cruising altitude. The pilot opted to land in Katowice - everyone emerged safe and sound. Passengers are presently in transit, waiting for their rescheduled flight," Kraków Airport spokesperson, Natalia Vince, told the Polish site "radiozet.pl".

Post this incident, a technical inspection was deemed necessary and specialized professionals were called upon. In the meantime, passengers had to wait for confirmation regarding the aircraft's ability to continue its journey.

The carrier ultimately provided a replacement aircraft. Its departure from Katowice to Birmingham was scheduled for post 6 a.m. Eastern Time.

IMGW Issues Weather Warnings

Unfavorable weather conditions are currently prevailing in Poland, with rain and snow in different areas. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued first and second-level alerts for strong winds.

First-level alerts are applicable to the eastern part of the country, excluding the extreme north and southeast. Meanwhile, second-level warnings span the entirety of western and central Poland.

"A severe windstorm, with an average speed of up to 25 mph and gusts reaching 62 mph, is forecasted in these areas," the IMGW informed.
