Lemons are a rich source of citric acid. While beneficial in many ways, the acid can erode the enamel - the outer, hard layer of teeth.

Experts warn that regular consumption of lemon water can gradually weaken and destroy the enamel. This fact is especially crucial for those who consume the beverage on an empty stomach, leaving the enamel more vulnerable to acid damage.

Citric acid can interfere with the absorption of iron from other foods. Despite vitamin C, also found in lemons, being known for promoting iron absorption, citric acid exhibits the contrary effect. Those struggling with iron deficiency should remember that daily lemon water intake could further decrease their body's iron levels.

Issues with the digestive and urinary systems

Although often touted as a digestion remedy, lemon water could trigger heartburn or reflux in susceptible individuals. In substantial amounts, it may also lead to stomach problems, including nausea or diarrhea.

Consistent consumption of lemon water may irritate the bladder; thus, it may be best avoided by those predisposed to bladder inflammation.

Interactions with medications

Lemon water can impact the effectiveness of certain drugs - it could, for example, increase the potency of anticoagulant medications like warfarin. Those regularly taking medications should consult a doctor or pharmacist before incorporating lemon water into their daily diet.

Vitamin C overdose

Vitamin C is vital for health. However, an excess of it can give rise to different health issues - from diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain to kidney stones. A daily intake of lemon water won't typically spur such effects, but those who consume many other vitamin C sources might be at risk.

Moderation is the key, as always. Consuming lemon water occasionally and maintaining oral hygiene after consumption can help avert most potential health issues. However, consulting with a doctor or pharmacist before introducing any substantial dietary changes is advisable.
