Legendary soccer coach in mourning. Cathy Ferguson has died
Sad news is coming from Manchester. Cathy Ferguson, the wife of famous coach Sir Alex Ferguson, has passed away at the age of 84. The couple was married for nearly six decades. Manchester United has already paid tribute to the deceased.
Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the most decorated coaches in the history of soccer. From 1986-2013, he led Manchester United, achieving successes that will be hard for any coach to repeat. During his tenure, the "Red Devils" clinically claimed the championship of England 13 times, and also triumphed twice in the Champions League.
It is unknown how many of these successes would have been achieved without the coach's wife, Cathy. The legendary manager often emphasized her support in his daily work. To understand who Cathy Ferguson was to Sir Alex, it is enough to quote his words from 2013 when he was headed for a well-deserved retirement:
- Cathy has been a key figure throughout my entire career, providing a foundation of both stability and support. Words can't express what that meant to me - Ferguson said at the time.
The couple got married in 1966. During their 57 year marriage, Sir Alex and Cathy Ferguson have had three children and 12 grandchildren.
News of Cathy Ferguson's death has been confirmed by members of her family, as well as Manchester United on social media. The club issued a special statement in which it honored the deceased while offering condolences to the legendary coach and his family.
"Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy. Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career," the club wrote on its social media.
This is not the only way the club from Old Trafford is honoring the memory of Sir Alex Ferguson's deceased wife. On the official website, we can read that during Saturday's match with Brentford, United players will wear black armbands. The "Daily Mail" reports that a similar gesture will be made by Manchester United's female players, who will face Arsenal in a league match on Friday.
