Lavender care tips: Essential summer pruning for a lush garden
Lavender is a common sight in home gardens, not only for its beauty but also for its positive effects on the nervous system. To ensure it grows optimally, remember to care for it in July.
We pay special attention to our gardens during the spring and summer seasons. Some focus on growing fruits and vegetables, while others concentrate on ornamental plants and flowers that add charm. If lavender is part of your garden, you should know that July (or early August) is the time for pruning.
Lavender requires pruning
Lavender needs regular pruning to keep it healthy and rejuvenated. Therefore, garden owners with lavender should prune it throughout the spring and summer. If it grows excessively, pruning may also be necessary in the fall.
However, the most crucial pruning for lavender occurs in the summer—in July or early August. During this time, focus on removing the fading flowers and leafless stems. This will encourage blooming and help the plant become denser.
How to prune lavender
Lavender is best pruned into a spherical shape. A sharp pruner is ideal for the perfect cut. Otherwise, the cut stems may be jagged and could get damaged. Prune the lavender to about one-third of its height.
When pruning, start by removing old and dry stems. Then, shape the bush by cutting as close to the new buds as possible but never below the green shoots. Cutting too low will prevent the lavender from growing back from the old stems.
Remember, lavender is a valuable addition to your garden. Its intense aroma is soothing and helps reduce stress. Lavender also calms the nerves and aids in falling asleep.
