Landslide in southwest China leaves 30 missing, rescue ongoing

According to Chinese state media, at least 30 people are missing in southwest China due to a landslide, which has buried some houses. The rescue operation is ongoing, and about 200 people have been evacuated from the endangered area.

The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched hundreds of rescuers, including firefighters, to a village in Junlian County, located in the southern part of the country.

The landslide buried 10 houses, and around 30 people are considered missing.

State media reports that two people have been rescued and approximately 200 have been evacuated from the danger zone.

Rescue operation continues

The BBC reports that a command center has been set up at the scene to coordinate the rescue efforts. The operation is ongoing.

A resident told "Beijing News" that over the past six months, falling rocks have frequently been observed from the mountain. Geologists conducted an inspection of the area at the end of last year.

President Xi Jinping has expressed concern about the situation and urged authorities to make every effort to locate the missing people.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang has ordered an investigation and inspection of potential geological threats in nearby regions. According to the Xinhua agency, Premier Li also emphasized the need to evacuate residents from the danger zone to prevent further disasters.

Sky News reports that landslides in China are common, especially in mountainous regions, where heavy rainfall can lead to ground destabilization.
