"We are currently in a difficult period, a time of war, which calls for decisive action from the authorities," Dmitry Peskov told the student news channel MGIMO 360.
"I believe that in a time of war, of course, there should be some censorship. And certain practices that would normally be unacceptable during peacetime, are now a must" Peskov emphasized, as reported by the Russian agency TASS.
Vladimir Putin's press secretary, however, struggled to distinguish between acceptable criticism and defamation of the Russian Armed Forces.
"Where is the line? I can't answer this question. It is very thin. And that's why I would advise all those who, without having a clear understanding of what is going on, want to speculate so indiscriminately and throw some words of criticism at our army, at those who are engaged in the special military operation, to think long and hard here," the Kremlin representative advised.
In March 2023, the Russian penalty for publicly discrediting the army increased from five to seven years in prison.
In the interview, Peskov also discussed about individuals who have left Russia. He expressed doubt that those who, after leaving, have criticized their homeland and shown support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, will be welcomed back into the country.
According to him, these individuals' return to Russia seems unfeasible, setting aside the laws applicable to them.
Contrarily, the Kremlin spokesperson rejects the notion that numerous young people have left Russia. "Consider the number of boys who volunteered to go to the frontlines, who joined different units, who were mobilized and are presently battling. The majority remained," he claimed.
