"The situation is developing according to the most alarming scenario. We call on all parties to exercise restraint in light of what is happening," stated Peskov, as quoted by the Kremlin news agency TASS.
"Of course, we condemn any actions that lead to civilian deaths," added Putin's spokesperson.
Iran's attack on Israel
On Tuesday evening, Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel. The Israeli army reported that it shot down "a large part" of the 180 missiles flying toward Israel. No casualties were reported. Iran announced that the raid was in retaliation for Israel's killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, and Iranian General Abbas Nilforoushan.
Western countries condemned this attack. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken deemed it "absolutely unacceptable." German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warned Iran that this was a dangerous escalation of the situation. French Prime Minister Michel Barnier expressed concern over the escalation of the conflict; the United Kingdom and the United Nations condemned the attack.
U.S. forces actively defended Israel. The decision was made by Joe Biden, who ordered the troops stationed in the area to intercept missiles heading toward Israel.
The Pentagon reported that the defense involved two destroyers, USS Cole and USS Bulkeley. British forces also participated in the action.
