Know the signs: The lethal danger of acute pancreatitis linked to alcohol and fatty meals
Severe pancreatitis can result in the destruction of the pancreas, internal bleeding, and potentially the patient's death. Factors such as specific medications, the continuous presence of alcohol in the daily diet combined with excessive food intake, other ailments, a viral infection, or trauma to the abdominal area can contribute to the inflammation of the pancreas.
Dr. Magdalena Cubała-Kucharska, a specialist in family medicine, a member of the Polish Nutrition Society, and the founder of the Arcana Institute of Integrative Medicine, highlights that the disease is often caused by the regular consumption of disproportionately large amounts of alcohol.
"Acute pancreatitis, in 80 percent of cases, affects people who have abused alcohol. Symptoms such as vomiting, electrolyte disturbances, fever, elevated levels of amylase and lipase could be indications that your most important digestive organ is digesting itself due to irritation," writes the doctor on her Instagram account.
The expert further adds that diseases such as fatty liver and gallstones considerably contribute to pancreatitis. Anyone diagnosed with this disease should primarily abstain from consuming alcoholic beverages and adhere to a strict diet.
Various methods are utilized in treating acute pancreatitis. These include antibiotic therapy, surgical removal of damaged pancreatic tissues, specialized nutrition, and peritoneal lavage. If gallstones are the cause of the inflammation, the stone obstructing the flow of pancreatic juices is removed.
