Strawberries require special attention right after purchase. They are soft and prone to damage, which causes them to lose freshness quickly. Storing strawberries involves following a few simple rules. Avoid moisture and bruising the fruit, and also pay close attention to their freshness when purchasing. This is a common mistake that affects us from the moment we buy these seasonal delights.

Common mistakes when buying strawberries

When buying strawberries, consider their freshness and firmness. Avoid transferring them to single-use plastic bags, which can lead to bruising. It's advisable to buy strawberries in smaller quantities to prevent wastage. If possible, take them home in a punnet (often an additional cost, but at some places, you can agree to return it during your next purchase in exchange for another for a one-time fee). If you don't plan to eat them right away upon returning home, it's better not to store them in the fridge with the punnet.

How to extend the freshness of strawberries?

If you want to keep strawberries fresh for longer, store them flat in a dish lined with paper towels. The towel will absorb excess moisture, helping to maintain the fruits' condition. Remember to sort through the strawberries and remove any that are already bruised. To maintain longer freshness, avoid washing the strawberries immediately and don't remove the stems. You can also freeze the strawberries whole or blend them and freeze as well.
