Kathy Bates' unexpected Globes snub: retirement reconsidered?

Kathy Bates is one of the finest actresses, an Oscar winner, and a two-time Golden Globe recipient. She delivered another masterful performance at the latest Globes ceremony, even when she discovered that she wasn’t the one receiving the award.

Did you know that Kathy Bates' career and popularity peaked at 42? Then, she portrayed her iconic role as the psychopathic fan of a popular writer in the screen adaptation of Stephen King's novel, "Misery." In this film, an injured man wakes up after an accident, not in a hospital bed, but in the home of Annie, his devoted fan. It quickly becomes apparent that this is not a haven. Every fan of good horror likely shudders at the memory of Kathy Bates standing in the doorway with a hammer.

Although she debuted with Milos Forman, the King adaptation served as a springboard in her career. This led to roles in "Fried Green Tomatoes" and "Titanic." Television fans love her roles in "American Horror Story" and "The Office." Recently, she saddened fans with the announcement that she’s retiring. Her latest work is the legal series "Matlock," for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. However, she did not win—the statue went to Anna Sawai for her performance in the Disney+ series "Shogun." That evening, Disney+ swept the board, winning all the awards in the acting categories and the most coveted one: Best Drama Series.

Kathy Bates did not receive the Golden Globe - this was her reaction

In the "best actress in a drama series" category, alongside Bates and Sawai, the nominees were Emma D’Arcy ("House of the Dragon"), Maya Erskine ("Mr. and Mrs. Smith"), Keira Knightley ("Black Doves"), and Keri Russell ("The Diplomat"). When the verdict was announced, the camera briefly captured the reactions of all the nominees.

All the actresses smiled politely and applauded. However, Kathy Bates soon tore the paper she held, looking straight into the camera. Presumably, it was the speech stars prepare in case of a win. In this case, it was now useless.

Bates had every reason to hope for a win. Not only is she a great actress, but this role also serves as a farewell to her acting career. This theatrical gesture "for the cameras" is a humorous nod from an actress known for her great sense of humor. Perhaps this loss will prompt her to postpone retirement.
