Joe Biden "pardons" two turkeys for Thanksgiving and commits another blunder. Confuses Taylor Swift with Britney Spears
Joe Biden, during the traditional "pardoning" of two turkeys, Liberty and Bell, for Thanksgiving, attempted a culturally relevant comment but confused Britney Spears with Taylor Swift, claiming that Spears is currently performing in Brazil.
Monday marked Joe Biden's 81st birthday, a day filled with continuous duties for the U.S. President. During a ceremony in front of the White House, he symbolically "pardoned" two turkeys, Liberty and Bell, for Thanksgiving. His speech went smoothly until he deviated from the script and ventured into unanticipated territory.
Biden's error: He mistakenly believes Britney Spears is performing in Brazil
There was no doubt that Biden was in high spirits that day. Humorously, he claimed that he was celebrating his 61st birthday instead of his 81st, reflecting how youthful he feels. Although it was unlikely this joke could be twisted into a blunder, his reference to the pop music scene created a significant snag.
During his speech, Biden revealed that Liberty and Bell underwent a rigorous selection process to be "pardoned" by him at the White House. He attempted to draw a parallel with the music industry, explaining the difficulty of obtaining concert tickets for famous stars. However, he went a step too far, suggesting that, according to him, Britney Spears had recently performed in Brazil.
"Liberty and Bell had it tougher than selling tickets for the Renaissance Tour... or... Britney's tour... it's warm in Brazil now".
If Biden were to follow his notion and attend Britney's current tour in Brazil, he would be met with disappointment. Spears has no current plans to return to performing at this time. Interestingly, Taylor Swift, whom Biden likely confused with Spears, just performed in Rio de Janeiro.
The media quickly picked up on Biden's blunder, some using it to highlight questions about his memory. Supporters responded by arguing that he doesn't need to be a pop culture expert and that the president has more pressing issues to focus on than tracking music star tours. The turkeys, meanwhile, offered no opinion on the matter.
