During a recent meeting between US President Joe Biden and People's Republic of China's Chairman Xi Jinping, Biden emphasized the importance of keeping competition with China from escalating into conflict. Expressing concurrence, the Chinese leader underscored that rivalry should not be the defining trend and acknowledged that our vast planet can accommodate both powerful nations.

The long-anticipated meeting between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in California has commenced. Along with the leaders, diplomats and finance ministers from both nations are participating.

During the meeting, the White House clarified that Biden will reaffirm the unchanging US foreign policy. This includes continuous adherence to the "one China policy", support for Taiwan's independence, reinforcement of the island's defense abilities, and opposition against altering the status quo. Emerging concerns over Russia and China's strengthening ties, especially amidst the Ukraine war, will also be voiced by the US President.

On Wednesday, Biden re-emphasized the mutual understanding, saying that the rivalry should not transform into conflict. Xi followed suit, stating there is no need for competition to become the dominant trend.

Planet has Ample Room for Both Powers

Xi highlighted the possibility of coexistence: "The planet Earth is big enough for both countries to succeed. One's success can open opportunities for the other." He stressed that motives to transform competition into conflict should be controlled responsibly, an aspect the US aligns with.

Biden pointed out that, apart from rivalry, both nations have a vital duty toward their citizens to cooperate in combating global challenges. Examples include climate change, drug control, and the implications of artificial intelligence. He asserted that his cordial discussions with Xi have always been sincere, reflecting upon their 12-year personal and professional bond.

The California meeting marks the seventh discourse between the leaders since Biden's presidency started, but it's only their second in-person encounter. This is President Xi's first visit to the US since April 2017. The preceding talks occurred in November of the previous year during the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. During Biden's term, they have also conducted two virtual dialogues, in May 2022 and November 2021, each extending over several hours.
