Jeju Air flight returns due to landing gear scare
The Jeju Air plane had to turn back due to a landing gear malfunction, similar to the one that caused the crash in Muan.
Jeju Air flight 7C101 departed from Gimpo International Airport headed to Jeju but had to return to the airport because of a detected landing gear malfunction.
According to Yonhap, the flight lasted just under 50 minutes, and passengers were promptly informed of the technical issue.
The aircraft that turned back was a Boeing B737-800, the same model involved in the Muan crash. The landing gear malfunction was similar to the one suspected to have contributed to that crash.
Jeju Air has a fleet of 39 such aircraft.
The Muan disaster
In the crash on Sunday in Muan, 179 people lost their lives. Experts suggest that a landing gear issue may have been caused by a bird strike. South Korea’s Ministry of Transport described it as the most tragic air disaster in 30 years.
The acting president of South Korea, Choi Sang Mok, declared a national mourning period to last until January 4.
