After the attack on Ukraine, Russia faced sanctions from the West. Regardless of these sanctions, some manufacturers limited or completely cut off cooperation with entities from the largest country in the world, at least in terms of territory. Japan's unexpected easing of rules must have been an even greater surprise to the Russians.
According to autostat.ru, Japan has allowed the export of car parts from local brands to Russia. These are for so-called mild hybrids. The list includes several models from brands such as Suzuki, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Honda, and even Mercedes. However, these cars have the steering wheel on the right side.
This change will not benefit all Russians. It will mainly be advantageous for those accustomed to driving cars imported from Japan. For many years, residents of Russia's far eastern region did not hesitate to import much cheaper used cars from Japan.
The lifting of some restrictions is seen in Russia as a breakdown in Western solidarity. The Kremlin hopes that weakening global market demand will encourage individual governments to ease restrictions and perhaps even completely lift the sanctions.
