Israeli website's hypothetical dam attack stirs Egyptian fury

The Israeli website Nziv stirred controversy by describing a hypothetical attack on the Aswan High Dam in Egypt. This prompted a strong and immediate response from Egyptian politicians, who began discussing potential counterattacks on Tel Aviv.

Nziv, known for its military analyses, published a report that sparked tensions between Egypt and Israel. The article described a speculative war scenario in which Israel would attack the Aswan High Dam, one of the two dams on the Nile, located near the city of Aswan in Egypt.

The Aswan High Dam, constructed in 1971 with the support of the Soviet Union, is a vital component of Egypt's infrastructure. It regulates the flow of the Nile River, prevents floods, and generates approximately 3 billion KWh of energy annually.

According to the Polish Press Agency, Egyptian politicians reacted with outrage to the publication. Mostafa Bakry, an Egyptian parliamentarian, warned that the Egyptian armed forces could quickly reach Tel Aviv in the event of armed conflict. Similarly, Saada al-Figi, a former undersecretary of one of the ministries, threatened to destroy the Israeli nuclear reactor if Egypt were threatened.

Although Nziv's scenario was purely theoretical, some Egyptian politicians perceived it as a real threat. However, not everyone took the matter seriously. Major General Osama Mahmud Kbeir dismissed the portal's speculations as absurd and not to be taken seriously.

Tensions between Israel and Egypt

Relations between Egypt and Israel are currently tense, further exacerbated by the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Egypt condemned Israeli actions in the territory and rejected US requests to accept displaced residents of Gaza in the Sinai.

Though theoretical, the publication by the Nziv portal caused real tensions, highlighting the fragility of relations between these two countries in a region where any spark could lead to a crisis.
