Israeli forces (IDF) have for the first time used a system named "Iron Sting" - reports the DefenseRomania portal, which is publishing a video with the use of this previously secret weapon. It will serve the Israeli army to destroy Hamas rocket launchers.

The Israeli Armed Forces' special unit Magellan used "Iron Sting". The weapon has been used in the past few days, and now a recording has been published that shows a strike on an enemy target. The video shows an attack directed at one of Hamas' launchers, which upon hit, immediately breaks apart, and its fragments rise in the air.

The IDF points out that "operational use [of the »Iron Spike«] will revolutionize land warfare and equip battalions with a precise and effective firepower," – DefenseRomania reports. At the same time, we read that the weapon used by Israel is exceptionally precise, which is important in cases of attacks in densely populated areas (such as Gaza).

Generally speaking, the weapon in question is actually a guided mortar of 4.72 inches in caliber, developed by the company Elbit Systems based in Israel. Still in 2021, a year before the "Iron Sting" was put into use, the then Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz emphasized that it is a weapon that "meets the needs of the IDF, adapting combat capabilities to fight hidden enemies in urban environments while respecting legal and moral standards."

Even though the development of the "sting" started in 2010 and was successfully completed with tests in 2021, its first use was only in the recent days of conflict with Hamas.

"Iron Stinger" is characterized by dual guidance. The weapon uses a laser system and GPS. This combination, makes the accuracy and precision of this guided ammunition. At the same time, it minimizes the risk of collateral damage from an attack. Depending on the launcher, the missile has a range of about 0.6 to 7.5 miles. It is also known that the warhead of "Iron Stinger" is capable of penetrating doubly reinforced concrete, simultaneously causing an explosion and fragmentation effect.
