Spices typically have very long expiration dates, always listed on the packaging. Even when that date has passed, it doesn't mean they must be discarded. Spices are dry products that don't spoil easily. Bacteria don't grow on them, and they don't mold. However, much depends on how they're stored, as moisture is especially damaging.

Not always for the trash bin

Let's be honest, when we store spices for an extended period and their expiration date has passed, they gradually lose their flavor, aroma, and color. They become less potent, making it more challenging to season dishes effectively. However, this doesn't mean they must be thrown out. To assess their condition, simply smell them and inspect them closely. They should be dry, free of clumps, and without any threads that could indicate food moth larvae. The spices can still be used if their flavor is mild but still detectable. However, it's wise not to delay. If you have slightly expired aromatic spices, consider using them daily in winter teas or infusions. They can also be utilized in baths.

And when to throw them out

If you decide to discard spices, keep a few rules in mind.

  • Compost: Herbal spices like oregano, basil, thyme, or parsley are suitable for composting. They decompose naturally and enrich the compost with nutrients.
  • Organic waste: Spices should be disposed of in the organic waste bin.
  • Mixed waste: As a last option, spices can be placed in general trash.

And what about containers?

  • Paper bags: Packages made entirely of paper should be placed in the paper bin.
  • Paper bags lined with foil: These types of packages need to go in the mixed waste bin.
  • Plastic bags: Packages made solely of plastic should be discarded in the bin for metals and plastics.
  • Jars: Glass containers can be placed in the glass bin, but without lids. Metal or plastic lids should go into the bin for metals and plastics. Jars containing expired spices should be disposed of in the mixed waste bin.
