Iran's nuclear ambitions spark global alarm and UN review

During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), revealed that Iran possesses about 441 pounds of highly enriched uranium. To produce nuclear weapons, uranium must be enriched to 90 percent.

According to the Agency, from Iran's current stockpile, with appropriate enrichment, five nuclear warheads could be created. Grossi emphasized that in recent months, Iran has significantly increased its uranium enrichment capabilities, raising concerns within the international community.

The IAEA does not have full control over Iran's nuclear program.

We do not conduct inspections at the level and in the locations that we believe we should be monitoring, said Grossi, as quoted by the Iran International portal.

Tehran limits the inspectors' access, making it difficult to fully assess the situation.

UN Security Council to review Iran’s nuclear activities

France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have tasked the IAEA with preparing a report on Iran’s nuclear activities. The document is to be submitted to the UN Security Council, which may consider reimposing sanctions on Tehran. These sanctions are set to expire in October 2025. Last December, Paris, Berlin, and London called on Iran to immediately end nuclear escalation.

The situation in Iran remains tense, and the lack of full cooperation with the IAEA increases concerns about a potential nuclear threat. The international community is watching developments with apprehension, awaiting further actions from Iran and the response from the UN Security Council.

Iran's cooperation with Russia

However, this is not the end of concerning news from Iran. Just a few days ago, Presidents Vladimir Putin and Masud Pezeshkian signed an agreement on strategic cooperation. It includes, among other things, strengthening security and defense cooperation. Tehran may also support the Russian gas sector. The two countries are expected to consult on military threats and security issues. They will also be able to conduct military maneuvers on the territories of both nations.

Russia is also considering building new blocks in nuclear power plants in Iran. According to President Zelensky, this is dragging Iran into the war.
